SCHOOL INFORMATION

The government provides highly subsidized (that is, "free" except for certain hidden costs including schoolbooks) education in both (secular) State schools (Mamlachti)
and State Religious schools (Mamlachti Dati).
The latter are divided into regular "Ma'amad" schools and those with an extra helping of Torah, referred to as Torani.
Noam schools (influenced by the learning of Rav Kook) and Horev schools (influenced by the teachings of Rav Breuer and Rav Hirsch) fall into in this category. Some of the secular Mamlachti schools have a Tali (Reform Judaism) stream. Those looking for an Ultra-Orthodox framework (Hinnuch Atzmai, also known as haredi) must send their children to private schools, which are also subsidized by the government. Bais Yaakov, Talmud Torah, Heder and Yeshivot Ketanot fall into this category. The more Torah that is taught in a school, the more hidden costs there are.
Religious Junior High and High Schools are: Yeshiva High Schools (Yeshivot Tichoniot), many of which are boarding schools, where the boys stay over on scheduled Shabbats; Ulpanot (singular: Ulpana), the girls' equivalent of Yeshiva High School and Technical and Trade Religious High Schools
(Yeshivot Mikzo'iyot) (the ORT school system, Kiryat Noar and Omaniot fall into this category). These programs offer full Bagrut (high school matriculation exams, needed for university entrance).

PRESCHOOLS

Legally, children are required to attend kindergarten from the age of 3. Unless parents chose to send their children to private kindergartens, they may attend the municipal nursery closest to their home.
From age 5 (gan hova) attendance is compulsory and this service is free except for certain hidden costs.
Previous to that, even municipal kindergartens charge a fee and many parents prefer to send their children to private nurseries.
Before the age of three, children go to a mishpachton: a group of 5 or 6 children being cared for in the home of one person. Community centers provide supervised mishpachtonim but some families prefer a private one. From age 4 to 5 (gan trom hova) and from 3 to 4 (gan trom trom hova), education at municipal kindergartens is subsidized.
