Military service is compulsory for both men (three years) and women (under two years). Exempt from service are most minority groups, those who are not physically or psychologically fit, mothers and married women, religious males who are studying in an accredited Jewish Law institution and religious females who choose National Service (Sherut Leumi) instead.
In the IDF, weapons and force are only for the purposes of military operations, not to harm non-combatants or prisoners of war. Great effort is made to respect human dignity and property. Soldiers must show respect for the beliefs, values and historical sites of all civilian and military personnel.
