Israeli Arabs demand Or Commission hear injured protesters The Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice Theodore Or is not doing its job unless it hears testimony from those protesters who were injured in the October riots, Israeli Arab leaders claimed yesterday. 'There are more than 200 Umm el-Fahm residents who were injured in the riots, and until now, not one of them has been called on to testify before the commission,' said Hassan Jabarin at a press conference yesterday after the commission finished hearing testimony on the riots in Umm el-Fahm. Jabarin is attorney for the Arab human-rights organization Adalah, which collected testimony on behalf of the commission. Six witnesses testified yesterday: three policemen, and three residents of Umm el-Fahm who were present during the riots but not injured. Jabarin said the commission is flawed in that it should only be investigating the behavior of the police in the riots. 'We know that Israeli Arab protesters threw rocks and blocked roads, but a state commission needs to investigate the behavior of the police.' At the press conference, Umm el-Fahm Mayor Sheikh Raed Salah and Hadash MK Issam Mahoul called for the suspension of Cmdr. Alik Ron, head of Northern Police District, for his role in the October riots, and Salah warned that if he remains in his post by Land Day on March 30, it could lead to bloodshed. 'We heard from witnesses that Ron was responsible for the events, and therefore he should be immediately suspended,' Salah said through a translator. An Israel Police statement later expressed full support for Ron. Land Day commemorates the first nationwide protest by Israeli Arabs in 1976 against expropriation of Arab-owned land. Today, the committee begins to hear testimony on the October events in Sakhnin.
