Israel's first astronaut, Col. Ilan Ramon, blasted off into space on his historic flight on Space Shuttle Columbia on January 16, 2003. The shuttle flight was the culmination of years of planning and effort.
Ramon, the son of a Holocaust survivor, was well aware of the symbolic
nature of his flight for Israel and the Jewish people worldwide.
The world now mourns this Israeli hero, who lit up the skies with his
bravery, smile and love of Israel and the Jewish people. On the occasion of
his tragic death, the Jerusalem Post provides articles, audio programs and
photographs celebrating the life and achievements of Ilan Ramon, and
reporting on the tragic circumstances of his death on February 1, 2003.
