Israel decides at a fateful time
To quote Winston Churchill: "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." However, Sir Winston, known to contradict himself, also said: "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government, except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
Perhaps in that spirit, Israel will be consumed by politics, campaigning and electioneering from the November 19 Labor Party primary, through the Likud primary in December, and likely beyond the general elections on January 28.
The country is selecting a new government, its fifth in a decade, at a fateful time. The war with Palestinian terrorists, the potential US attack on Iraq and the global "War on Terrorism" are all hanging over the Israeli electorate. Add to that a pending economic crisis and unaddressed social and cultural issues, and it becomes clear the stakes in this election are high.
This special section is designed to present you with everything you need to be up to date on the course of these elections.
