Two Paratroopers killed in gun battle in Bint Jbail

JPost.com Staff

Two IDF soldiers were killed in an operation in the south Lebanese village of Bint Jbail on Tuesday night, the IDF released for publication early Wednesday.

The two were identified as St.-Sgt. Oren Lifshitz, 21, of Gazit and St.-Sgt. Moran Cohen, 21, of Ashdot Ya’akov.

The two belonged to a force from the Paratroopers Brigade that was conducting fierce firefights in the village.

One of the soldiers was seriously wounded when the force came under heavy fire from a group of Hizbullah guerrillas. The second soldier was hit during the evacuation of the first when Hizbullah forces fired at the rescue squad.

A third soldier was lightly wounded in the second gun battle.

The rescue operation lasted several hours, during which the soldier who was seriously wounded died of his wounds.

At least 20 Hizbullah guerrillas were killed in the operation.

The soldiers’ families were notified of their deaths before their names were released.

St.-Sgt. Oren Lifshitz, 21, of Gazit
Lifshitz, of the paratroopers’ elite reconnaissance unit, was killed Tuesday morning in the Hizbullah stronghold of Bint Jbail while trying to rescue his comrade, St.-Sgt. Moran Cohen, who had been mortally wounded in a fierce shoot-out with Hizbullah terrorists. In the end, both soldiers were killed.

Lifshitz, who was described as an affable, modest, and especially helpful young man, was due to be discharged from the army in November.

His parents immigrated to Israel from Argentina and settled on the kibbutz.

His parting words to his mother in their last conversation were, "DoSun.-Tue. not worry, we will win." Lifshitz, who was buried Wednesday evening at his Kibbutz, is survived by his parents and three brothers.

St.-Sgt. Moran Cohen, 21, of Ashdot Ya’acov
Cohen, who served in the paratrooper’s elite reconnaissance unit, followed in the footsteps of his three older brothers, all of whom served in elite combat units.

His mother, who went through incessant worries about all her children during their service, intuitively felt over the last month that something terrible was going to happen to her youngest son.

"He wanted to be the best there was," a friend recounted Wednesday.

Cohen is survived by his parents and four siblings.
