Erez bombing victim dies 10 days after attack

MARGOT DUDKEVITCH

Hundreds thronged to the new cemetery in Ashkelon to attend the funeral of Nissim Arviv, 26, who died early Tuesday morning of wounds sustained in a mortar shell attack on the Erez industrial zone 10 days ago.

Arviv, from Nisanit in the northern Gaza Strip, was standing outside the car repair workshop where he worked when the mortar shells exploded near him. He moved to Nisanit 18 months ago and is survived by his wife and one-year-old baby.

In violence Tuesday, a policeman suffered light to moderate wounds when shots were fired from a passing car at security forces operating to track down stolen cars in Shuweika, south of Tulkarm. In the return fire, Fatah fugitive Sanad Ghanim, 24, and his assistant, Mohammed Nasser, were both shot.

Pursued by security forces, the two fled towards Tulkarm, where they abandoned the car. Palestinian media reports said they were taken to the local Dr. Thabit Thabit hospital where Ghanem died and Nasser was treated for a gunshot wound to the back.

The wounded police officer was taken to the Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera.

During the day, a Kassam rocket was fired at Sderot. No one was wounded but several cars were damaged and two residents were treated for shock.

Hamas claimed responsibility for nine mortar shells on Israeli settlements in Gush Katif. No one was wounded but damage was caused to houses and cars. In one of the attacks, two mortar shells exploded in Netzer Hazani near the community's occupied kindergarten and synagogue.

A senior IDF officer in the OC Southern Command expressed doubts on Tuesday as to whether newly elected PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas would succeed in halting the Hamas-initiated attacks on settlements in the Gaza Strip and western Negev. The IDF is monitoring the situation, the officer said, adding that there are no immediate plans to launch any widespread operations in the Gaza Strip.

However, he warned, 'the continued attacks on settlements and IDF posts will not go without a response.' He denied reports that the IDF is currently implementing a policy of restraint and will refrain from responding to the ongoing Kassam rocket and mortar shell attacks on Israeli communities.

Elsewhere in the Gaza Strip, a bomb was detonated near an IDF patrol near Rafah and several times during the day IDF posts along the Philadelphi Route came under fire. In all instances no damage was reported and no one was wounded.

On Tuesday night, shots were fired at an IDF post on the Karni-Netzarim road in northern Gaza. No one was wounded in the attack.

In the West Bank before dawn, security forces arrested nine Palestinian fugitives in raids in Nablus and surrounding villages. The raids were the first conducted by security forces since Saturday, when the army halted operations in West Bank cities and towns in honor of the PA election.
