MARGOT DUDKEVITCH
Tehiya Bloomberg was murdered, her husband, Shimon, and daughter, Tzippi, 14, were seriously wounded, and two other children and a hitchhiker were wounded last night, when Palestinian terrorists fired at their three-car convoy on the Azoun bypass road.
According to initial reports, the first car in the convoy, driven by Yair Gavish, a resident of Ma'aleh Shomron, overtook a Palestinian vehicle traveling very slowly in front of him. As he passed it, the terrorists opened fire, hitting his car but missing him.
The second car in the convoy, containing the Bloombergs from Ginot Shomron, also attempted to pass the Palestinian car and were sprayed with gunfire. Tehiya Bloomberg was fatally wounded and died shortly afterwards.
The two men were taken to Beilinson Hospital, while the girl was taken to Kfar Saba's Meir Hospital.
Gavish told Israel Radio that the incident occurred 400 meters from the entrance to the village of Azoun. 'We were traveling in a three-car convoy, and I overtook the car in front when suddenly the shooting began. Bullets hit my car and I sped toward Ma'aleh Shomron to report the incident. There were no soldiers on the road at the time,' he said.
Ginot Shomron is a neighborhood in Karnei Shomron. Karnei Shomron secretary Udi Lieberman said, 'It is a tragedy. We are now trying to locate members of the family to inform them.'
Shortly after the shooting, shots were fired at an IDF roadblock at Jerusalem's Har Homa neighborhood, but caused no casualties. Elsewhere in the West Bank last night, shots were fired at an Israeli vehicle near Na'aleh, and at one between Nili and Talmon. Shots were also fired at an IDF post near Ofra and at a Border Police base near Tulkarm. In the late afternoon shots were fired at soldiers north of Einav, which set off a gun battle between soldiers and Palestinians.
In the Gaza Strip yesterday morning, shots were fired at an IDF post in the southern Gaza area and at an IDF jeep east of Pnei Atzmon in Gush Katif.
Last night shots were fired several times at soldiers near Neveh Dekalim and at army positions in the community's industrial zone. Shots were also fired at an IDF post east of Gadid.
Early yesterday morning, IAF helicopters fired four missiles and damaged a Palestinian national security base near Rafah in response to the continued mortar fire by Palestinians on Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip.
Col. Fawzi Zaqouk, the area's national security commander, said three missiles hit his office and caused considerable damage, but no casualties. Zaqouk said that forces in the building prior to the attack heard the helicopters and fled the area. 'All Palestinians are now the target of the Israeli military,' he told reporters.
