Oliver North brings "Radio America" to Jerusalem Post studio
By Jerusalem Post Staff
Oliver
North first came to Israel as a Naval Academy midshipman in
1967, came again in 1973 after a tour of duty in Vietnam,
and has returned a dozen times since.
The retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel came back to
Israel in July, where he broadcast his radio show, Radio America,
from The Jerusalem Post's studios for a week.
North, who also serves as a Fox News war correspondent and
host of "War Stories," came to international prominence in
1987 during his testimony to Congress over the Iran-Contra
affair.
After his retirement from the service, North made an unsuccessful
bid for a US Senate seat from Virginia in 1994.
Today, Radio America reaches an estimated audience of 2.5
million listeners through 115 stations. North is here as part
of the "America's Voices" program, which brings prominent
radio personalities to Israel in order to raise awareness
of the country's situation to listeners in the US.
"We have a lot of friends in Israel and great admiration
for the people of this country and for what they've endured,"
North says. "I'm here to see how you're weathering the storm."
Among others, North will be interviewing former prime minister
Binyamin Netanyahu and Construction and Housing Minister Natan
Sharansky.
North also jokes that he has come to "cover Yasser Arafat's retirement ceremony."
