Community-based popularity websites have garnered an audience of millions upon millions of web useres worldwide by playing up content according to democratic editorial control. Technorati is an Internet search engine that indexes, searches and tracks blogs and other forms of citizen media using 'ping' options whereby a blogger pings Technorati when his/her blog is updated and 'Favorites' options where users can add blogs to their favorites lists by clicking on the Technorati buttons available on the blogs. Blogs which are 'favorited' often can appear on the Technorati homepage and/or the relevent subsections. Users can submit comments on blogs 'favorited' on the site. Technorati also shows bloggers who has referenced their entries and on which sites using the 'Authority' feature.

At its most basic level, del.icio.us allows users to save their bookmarks online. Del.icio.us also gives users the ability to "tag" their bookmarks with descriptive category names. For example, someone who has bookmarked multiple Web pages that deal with the Washington Nationals baseball team could tag those links with any terms they want, like "baseball," "nationals," "natsfan," etc. As members of a "social bookmarking" community, del.icio.us sers can also see how many other people have bookmarked the same pages, and they can look at those users' bookmark collections to find other interesting online content.
