Grado,
an island town surrounded by a large lagoon, is only accessible via
a meters-wide land bridge built just above the water's surface.
This
resort town is renowned for its popular thermal baths and stunning
beaches along the shores of the Gulf of Trieste.
After
crossing over the narrow access bridge, you will be surprised by
a small-boat harbor located directly within the placid city center.
Fishing vessels and private yachts line up side-by-side, protected
from the tumultuous sea by the city's houses. A couple of turns
further down the road you find yourself wandering the narrow alleys
and passageways typical of small Italian villages. Here in the center,
where the piazza and the basilica are located, is where you will
find locals dining on trattoria in sidewalk cafes.
Grado,
halfway between Venice and Trieste, is a stone's throw from Central
Europe. Emperor Francis Joseph acknowledged Grado as the "official
health resort" of the Hapsburg Empire in 1892. Thousands of tourists
from Austria and Germany now journey here to enjoy the hot springs
and the summer's sunny Mediterranean beaches.
