The Jerusalem Post visited Friuli-Venezia Giulia, an untravelled region in the extreme northeast corner of Italy. We found there a unique Jewish heritage and an enchanting location so unlike the rest of Italy. This is our report.

Visiting
Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Dusk has almost turned to night and the sky is black with rain. My Italian driver is pushing our Lancia sports car to 150 km/h on the wet road and my thoughts turn to the red wine we shared not long ago at the dinner table. A soccer game plays on the radio and we communicate in a stubborn German - our only common language. Life is beautiful and it's good to be in Italy. More...

PLACES TO VISIT

Trieste - The port city of the Hapsburg Empire
Mussolini chose Trieste from where to proclaim his racism. The city had one of the largest Jewish communities in Italy and almost every family had a Jewish relative or friend.

Udine - An Italian city empty of tourists
The Jews of Udine were forced to wear the yellow badge in 1424 and only Jews that were protected by a special license, the condotta, were permitted to live in the city.

Gorizia - A divided city
At the dead end of a small street, we saw a sign saying that it was illegal to cross the border to Slovenia.

Cividale - A picturesque mountain town
A headstone with Hebrew letters is cemented into the arch of Porta San Pietro.

Aquileia - One of the most important cities from Roman times
The basilica houses a copy of the original rotunda from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Grado - The Hapsburg Empire's official health resort
Fishing boats and private yachts pack the local marina, protected from sea swells by the city's encircling houses.

Palmanova - A fairy tale fortress town
Sources tell about a local medieval inn run by Jews from San Vito al Tagliamento.
