2000 - Millennium

Manger Square Millennium celebrations get underway in Israeli Nazareth, Jerusalem and in the Palestinian Authority city of Bethlehem. Over 3.2 million tourists are expected to visit the Holy Land in what is predicted to be a record year for tourism. A visit by Pope Paul II is planned for the last ten days of March 2000. Meanwhile, Israelis and Palestinians await the outcome of new peace negotiations on a permanent peace settlement. According to an agreement signed in September at the Egyptian Sinai resort of Sharm a-Sheikh, a framework accord is due to be completed by February, 2000 with a final agreement by September. In December, as the eve of the millennium approaches, Israel and Syria also announce the resumption of peace talks, stalled for nearly three years.
