Meanwhile, Israelis and Palestinians await the outcome of new peace negotiations on a permanent peace settlement. According to an agreement signed in September at the Egyptian Sinai resort of Sharm a-Sheikh, a framework accord is due to be completed by February, 2000 with a final agreement by September. In December, as the eve of the millennium approaches, Israel and Syria also announce the resumption of peace talks, stalled for nearly three years.
