| 1993 - Oslo Peace Accords
Secret negotiations between the PLO and the Israeli government of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin lead to Israeli recognition of the PLO and the signing of an interim peace accord. Yasser Arafat arrives in Gaza to set up an autonomous Palestinian Authority administration in sections of the West Bank and Gaza, from which Israel withdraws militarily. In 1995, Rabin signs a peace treaty with Jordan, but only a few months later in November, Rabin is assassinated by a right-wing Jewish fanatic; Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu is subsequently elected as prime minister in 1996. Netanyahu is defeated in May, 1999 in another round of elections by Labor's Ehud Barak. Barak pledges to reinvigorate the peace process after several years of stalemate.
