| 1977 - Peace with Egypt
Secret contacts between the Egyptians and Israel lead to the surprise visit of new Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to Jerusalem, in November 1977. In 1978, after prolonged talks, Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, a noted leader of the nationalistic Likud bloc, sign a draft agreement for a peace treaty, which is concluded in 1979. Egypt's peace treaty with Israel represents the first crack in the wall of Arab world rejection of the Jewish state. Sadat, however, is later assassinated.
