1974 - Yom Kippur War

Longstanding tensions between Israel and the pan-Arab regime of Gamel Abdul Nasser over Israel's occupation of the Sinai Penninsula, break out in war again on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, in October 1973. The Egyptians attack Israeli positions in the Sinai desert, while Syria attacks on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Both Arab forces gain significant ground before being repelled by Israel, which suffers heavy losses in human lives and morale. The Egyptian battle victories, ironically, bolster Egyptian national self-confidence, and helps set the stage for later peace talks.
