| 1968-88 - The Rise of Palestinian Nationalism
The Palestinian Liberation Organization becomes an increasingly prominent factor in Arab resistance to Israel, launching commando attacks from Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. The grueling war of guerrilla raids and terror attacks continues in various forms throughout the next two decades under PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat. In 1988, the focus of Palestinian opposition to Israel shifts to the West Bank and Gaza, where mass disturbances and protests erupt in the Intifada, or uprisings. The Intifada coincides with a gradual shift in PLO thinking towards acceptance of Israel's existence and a two-state solution to the grinding conflict over land and territory. The PLO also gain increased legitimacy as the representative of Palestinians both in international arenas and among Israeli leftists.
