1950-67 - Young Israel & Six Day War

1950 Years of rapid development and massive Jewish immigration are marred by war. The Sinai Campaign gets underway in 1956 and tensions build again in the mid-1960s on the Syrian and Egyptian front. In June 1967, Israel launches a surprise pre-emptive attack against Egypt and Syria, resulting in a resounding Israeli victory. Israel conquers the West Bank and the Jordanian sector of east Jerusalem, uniting the city and obtaining control over Jewish, Christian and Islamic holy sites in the walled Old City. The United Nations later passes resolutions conditioning a final Arab peace settlement with Israel upon Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories, and recognition of Palestinian rights.
