48. John Howard
Australian Prime Minister John Howard reaffirmed that
Australian-Israeli relations continue to be 'very good' despite the 1997
Maccabiah disaster. Howard proved to Israelis that his country was behind
Israel when he said he understood why the organizers of the 2000 summer
Olympics in Sydney erected a memorial to the 11 Israeli athletes killed at
the 1972 games in Munich. Arab leaders want the monument to be taken down.
