Violence sweeps Israel, territories
By Margot Dudkevitch
JERUSALEM (October 2) - Twenty-nine Palestinians and two border policemen were killed, and some 1,000 people were wounded, in three days of fierce rioting in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the Gaza Strip. Palestinian gunmen firing on IDF troops from rooftops and fortified positions resulted in the use of attack helicopters and anti-tank weapons for the first time in an effort to quell the violence.
Protesters have been egged on by Palestinian media calls to "join the battle to protect al-Aksa."
The unrest erupted Friday after riots on the Temple Mount in which four Palestinians were killed and dozens of policemen were wounded, and police were forced to evacuate Jewish worshipers from the Western Wall Plaza, which was being pelted by rocks.
