Shas
A Sephardi haredi (ultra-Orthodox) party, founded before the elections to the 11th Knesset (1984). It has been actively engaged in the battle against the involvement of the High Court of Justice in religious matters. The positions of its spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, regarding the peace process are moderate, but most of the party's supporters are right-wingers. It had 10 seats in the 14th Knesset and is a member of the current government.

The recent convinction and sentencing of party leader Aryeh Deri for bribery and fraud could have a significant effect on support for the party in the coming elections. There is a question mark as to whether the 'Deri effect' will increase or reduce the party's standing amongst the Sephardi electorate.
