Parties and Lists

According to the Elections Law, only parties can run in elections. In fact, lists running in the Knesset must include at least one party, but can be made up of several parties or include bodies that are not parties.

In this year's elections, the following lists are made up of more than one party: One Israel -- comprises the Israel Labor Party, Gesher, and Meimad; The National Union -- comprises the New Herut, Moledet, and Tekuma; United Torah Judaism -- comprises Agudat Yisrael and Degel Hatorah; Balad -- comprises the National Democratic Alliance and the Arab Movement for Renewal.

In contrast, Meretz -- which used to comprise the Ratz, Mapam, and Shinui parties -- is now an independent party.

The Ra'am list comprises a party and two non-parties: the Arab Democratic Party, the National Unity Front, and part of the Islamic Movement.

New Parties

The Green Party is the country's first environmentalist party. It was established in December 1997 and is headed by MK Dedi Zucker, who joined it after failing to gain a realistic place in the Meretz list. In addition to dealing with environmental issues, the party advocates secular-religious dialogue and strengthening the multi-cultural nature of Israeli society.

Power to the Pensioners is a single-issue senior citizens party, headed by former Histadrut activist and Labor MK, Gideon Ben-Yisrael.
