Education: PhD, Humboldt University, East Berlin

Former career: Senior lecturer and department head, department of philosophy, Bir-Zeit University; senior researcher, Van Leer Institute, Jerusalem.

Basic positions: Advocates Israel as a secular, democratic state with cultural autonomy for its Arab citizens. Favors a bi-national solution to the Israeli-Palestinian problem.

Strengths: Known for his intellectual integrity.

Weaknesses: Does not enjoy the support of wide sectors of the Arab population.

According to latest opinion polls:
Chances of reaching second round: none.
Where votes will go in a second round: Ehud Barak or Yitzhak Mordechai , but many Arab voters might not vote in a second round.
