People are surprised to discover that a wealth of wisdom and practical spiritual guidance exists within Judaism. Its esoteric doctrine has stayed so hidden that even many Jews know nothing of the powerful teachings that are the wellsprings of their tradition. In recent generations, Jewish mysticism has started trickling into mainstream bookstores and classrooms. Yet, this revolution is still inaccessible to most Jews. Even if the ancient Aramaic is translated and the confounding rabbinic code deciphered, the sweet wisdom of the Kabbalah remains incomprehensible to those unversed in the oceanic volume of traditional sources. Now, in one radical "moment", Susan Schneider has bridged all this by founding a correspondence school called, A Still Small Voice, which makes the depth of Jewish wisdom accessible to all. This is the first time that a woman has published original writings, citing Kabbalistic sources, and has received orthodox rabbinic support for her work. A Still Small Voice appeals to Jews of every persuasion, from those whose contact with it is their first association with anything Jewish, to those who have been learning all their lives in an orthodox context. Schneider chose to publish the material as a correspondence course (instead of a book) because it is a more intimate medium of instruction, creating a dialogue through the weekly mailings. Each lesson weaves together depth and practicality, presenting complex ideas, yet grounding them in story and practice. The material is metered so one can't skim ahead, and each lesson has a practical exercise to aid integration of the teaching. Unlike books, a correspondence school guides its students along a course of extended growth with instruction that builds month after month, year after year. A year and a half of weekly lessons are currently available in four sequential courses entitled, Prayer and Destiny, The Enlightened Body, Synchrony and Time Trekking. Prayer and Destiny probes the mystery of 'will' which Kabbalah considers the primal root of soul. The essential measure of spiritual progress is the refinement of 'will'. Prayer, in its purest sense, is the perfect tool for this work. The Enlightened Body explores the complex interrelationship of mitzvah and meditation. Each rectifies a different level of self and layer of reality. Jewish practice weaves them together into a path of astounding power. Synchrony directs the student to begin working with the six constant mitzvot. These are six meditations that an observant Jew holds in mind and heart at all times. Time Trekking explores the individual's mystical relationship with the cycles of the day, week, month and year. The Jewish calendar prescribes specific practices to bring our lives into harmony with this symphony of time. Schneider infuses her orthodox practice with radical amazement. Her love of G-d and joy of service shine through her teachings, her writings and her presence. She breathes new soul into old forms. A practice that once seemed empty and oppressive now pulses with life. The treasure was there all along, but through A Still Small Voice, Schneider brings it to light. A Still Small Voice carries the rabbinic certification of Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Horowitz, the Bostoner Rebbe. Every lesson is thoroughly reviewed by Rabbi Aharan Lopiansky of Mirrer Yeshiva.
