Purpose To provide an Israeli/Jewish experience through community service, hiking and a variety of study sessions.
Description Livnot U'Lehibanot, To Build and To Be Built, is a work and study program designed for Jewish men and women between the ages of 21-30 with little or no Jewish background.

Program highlights include a variety of hikes throughout the land of Israel, seminars in Tzfat and Jerusalem, and community service projects. In Tzfat the work revolves around the restoration of the ancient areas of the city. In Jerusalem excavations in the tunnels surrounding the Western Wall and environmental projects in the Jerusalem forests, are highlights of the program.

Many communities provide financial assistance for qualified applicants to attend Livnot. A partial list of communities includes: San Diego, San Gabriel & Pomona, San Francisco, Denver, New Haven, Wilmington, S. Palm Beach and Palm Beach, Broward County, Chicago, Indianapolis, Boston, North Shore MA, Springfield MA, Baltimore, Flint, North Jersey, Metro West NJ, Cincinnati, Columbus, Tulsa, Montreal, Philadelphia, Memphis, Nashville, Tidewater, Seattle and Madison. Special arrangements are available for residents of South Africa, Australia/New Zealand and the UK.

If you are between the ages of 21 - 26 and have never been to Israel with a peer group, you may be eligible for a Birthright Israel Gift. Birthright Israel will subsidize the Livnot program costs for ten days, and transportation costs of qualified applicants from gateway cities in North America. Livnot U'Lehibanot will cover the costs of the rest of the program.

We will be starting off the year 2000 by running two 2-week programs in January, which incorporate hiking, Jewish awareness and community service. We are now open for registration; our application forms can be downloaded from our website.

Target Group Post college men and women ages 21-30.
Courses A variety of courses and informal discussion groups on Jewish values, the Land of Israel, Jewish history and identity are among the courses offered during the program.
No. of Participants 25-40 participants in each program.
Duration of Activity Throughout the year there are a number of short term programs of 2-3 weeks and several long term programs of 6 weeks - three months.

In addition to our regular programs, Livnot is forming two groups to participate in archeological digs at the world famous site, Gamla, in the Golan. The dates for the digs are:
June 27 - July 2 and August 29 - September 3
Location of Activity Programs are based out of our campuses in Safed and Jerusalem. All programs spend time at each campus.

Religious Affiliation No level of religious observance is required. Shabbat and Kashrut are maintained on all group activities.
