| Ben-Gurion University Of The Negev M.D. Program in International Health and Medicine In Collaboration With Columbia University Health Sciences | |
| Purpose | To train doctors to provide health care for diverse populations and better understand the cultural, economic, environmental and technological factors that affect the health of individuals and communities worldwide. |
| Description | A four year, American-style medical degree program that includes early clinical work with diverse populations of the Negev. Students have the option of taking fourth- year clinical electives at Columbia University and must complete an International Health and Medicine clinical elective at an approved overseas medical facility. |
| Implementors | English-speaking faculty from Ben-Gurion University Faculty of Medicine, visiting faculty from Columbia University's Health Sciences Division, and guest lecturers from institutions and organizations specializing in global health. |
| Target Group | English-speaking pre-medical students from all over the world who are interested in the emerging field of international health. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree and pre-medical courses at an accredited college or university. |
| No. of Participants | There is a cap of 50 students in each first year class. Current enrollment for all classes is 120. |
| Duration of Activity | The first year begins in late July with a summer orientation. The M.D. degree is completed in four years. American citizens/permanent residents are expected to complete residency training in the United States. |
| Location of Activity | Ben-Gurion University of the Negev enrolls more than 16,000 students at campuses in Beer Sheva and Sede Boker in the Southern desert region. The university's medical school has played a major role in developing medical services and in advancing technology and desert agriculture for the ruggedly beautiful Negev region, which is home to a diverse population of Russian and Ethiopian immigrants, town-dwellers, kibbutzim, and semi-nomadic Bedouin. |
