  MAOR YEHUDA SYNAGOGUE
The Chief Rabbinate of Haifa
"This is an exceptional community consisting of members of the Technion faculty, new immigrants,... as well as long-time Israelis from many different backgrounds. The project that they have undertaken is holy in every sense..."

Maor Yehuda Congregation Builds a Community Center on Mt. Carmel Seeks Partnership.

A new Community Center is being built on Mt. Carmel in Haifa, at the initiative of the Maor Yehuda Congregation. The Center is located near to both the Technion - Israel Inst. of Technology, and to Haifa University.

Maor Yehuda Congregation was established twenty years ago by immigrants from English-speaking countries, from Switzerland and from France, who wished to carry on the positive aspects of Jewish communal life found in the Diaspora, in their new home in Israel.

For the past twenty years the minyan (located in the bomb-shelter of a school) has provided a home to all who wished to pray, celebrate, remember, or study with us.

Building THE BUILDING PROGRAM
Recently the community acquired land on the brow of Mt. Carmel, commissioned a team of architects to design a full-scale Community Center Complex, and started building. The Complex was designed to be built in two major stages:

STAGE ONE (which was occupied at Rosh Hashanah, 5759) consists of a Beit Midrash/Library, a small utility hall and the infrastructure for a Mikve.

Stage One (funded at a cost of about $600,000.- by contributions from our 65 members, private gifts, and, recently, some State grants) will accommodate about 90 families.

STAGE TWO comprises the Main Synagogue and the Communal Hall. The Synagogue will look out over Northern Israel and will be visible all the way to the Northern border at Rosh Hanikra and to Zefat.

When Stage Two (which is estimated to cost a further $650,000) is completed the community will be able to serve the needs of 200 families (members), our secular neighbours (including residents of over a 1000 newly completed homes in the areas), as well as families spending a Sabbatical at one of Haifa's Universities, High-Tech Campuses, or R&D Centers.

THE NEED
Completion of Stage One has attracted young academic families to the area. The consequent ecclerated membership enrollment requires us to undertake the building of Stage Two immediately.

Partnership with the Diaspora, and the Israeli Community.
Introducing a major benefactor (Community or Individual Family) into our complex will strengthen our community. Our Partners will have a concrete and spiritual stake in perpetuating, in Israel, the communal value which ensured the survival of the Jewish People in the Diaspora.

Our Partners will be consulted regarding the dedication (naming) of the Communal Center. A benefactor who joins with us now, will also be able to influence the choice of contractors, managers, and consultants for Stage Two.
