Krasnov, Carmi, pass qualifiers
by HEATHER CHAITATLANTA (August 1) -- Israelis Danny Krasnov and Lior Carmi both registered successes yesterday in their respective events.
Pole vaulter Krasnov will represent Israel in his second Olympic final tomorrow after finishing among the top 14 athletes yesterday. Although Krasnov did not clear the height of 5.75 meters required to reach the final, he was included among the best because he had cleared 5.60m on his first jump. In Barcelona Krasnov finished eighth overall in this event. Constantin Simionev, competing alongside Krasnov, failed to qualify for the final. Both athletes entered the competition at 5.40m which they cleared on their first jump but while Krasnov managed 5.60m on his first try, Simionev needed two attempts for this height which later prevented his reaching the final. Lior Carmi, competing in the 500m kayaking event, reached today's semifinal - scheduled to take place today at 4 pm - after placing within the top eight women. Carmi, 21, finished her first heat in sixth place in 1:57.57, a time which left her in the repecharge (consolation) group. There her time was a slower at 2:05.80 and a fourth place finish, but sufficient to allow her to participate in today's semifinal.
