Among the juniors Zeev Caspi did well to win the high jump with 1.64 m. and the long jump with 6.04 m., while Zipora Levin covered the 100 m. in 13.2 secs. in the women's events and carried three firsts.

Apel gains tennis title

(May 12) -- A big surprise of the local tennis season was the defeat of the veteran champion, Finklekraut, by Apel in the Palestine Tennis Championships held during the Passover week in Tel Aviv. The new champion won by 6/3, 6/3, 4/6, 2/6, 6/3.

In one of the most dramatic games of the season, Apel, out of training owing to his duties, played aggressively to keep Finkelkraut on the defensive, especially in the first two sets. The veteran player recovered to take the next two, but Apel ran out the winner after a well contested fifth deciding match in which he was mainly on top.

In the semi-final the new champion disposed of Buntman by 4/6, 7/5, 6/4, but the loser, who was the Junior champion the previous year extended Apel until the very last game. Buntman lacked steadiness especially when playing near the net. Finklekraut beat Finkelstein in two straight sets, 6/0, 6/1, to pass into the final.

Miss Gertrud Kornfeld dominated the women's single as usual and retained the title after beating Mrs. Fichman 6/0, 6/0 in a one-sided game.

The contenders in the men's singles, Finkelkraut and Apel, combined in the men's doubles to gain the title, defeating Kirshner and Feiger, 6/4, 7/5, 6/3, after gaining a "walk-over" in the semi-final, while in the mixed doubles Miss Kornfeld and Finklekraut beat Mrs. Fichman and Apel, 6/3, 6/1.

Several well known players were absent from the tournament this time as they were unable to get leave form the Forces. The Czech players, Vodicka and Backa, who had accepted an invitation were unable to participate owing to being unable to get the necessary visas.
