Welcome to this special Israel Jubilee celebration edition of The
Palestine Post.
Our aim is twofold. First, after 50 years,
we have the opportunity to give the most famous issue of The Palestine
Post a deserving place on the Internet. Second, we want to let readers
preview and evaluate the new page design scheme that we are planning for
our Jerusalem Post Internet Edition. A facsimile of the original front
page of the Sunday, May 16, 1948 edition appears below.
The State of Israel was declared on Friday, 14th May. As no newspaper
was published on Shabbat, the Declaration of Independence was reported in
Sunday's Palestine Post in an edition that was reduced to two printed
pages as a result of a national power outage. By that time, hostilities
had already broken out, and the early hours of the country's struggle
for existence are documented in this issue.
We hope you will enjoy browsing through these pages. Please take the
time to give us your feedback -- both on this issue and our new design scheme -- using the button below.
